  • March is Save Your Vision Awareness Month

    save-your-visionSome may not be aware of this, but the month of March is Save Your Vision Month.

    Here at feel that the best way to protect your eyes is to get a comprehensive eye exam each year. By doing so, you can detect a vision problem and prevent, delay or even reverse its progression depending on the prognosis.

    People who sit in front of a computer for long periods of time often encounter a variety of uncomfortable symptoms. Headaches, neck strain, backaches and wrist pain are common, but, sadly, the most prevalent symptoms of prolonged computer use-eye strain, blurred vision and dry eye-are often overlooked. In fact, eye and vision problems are the most frequently reported health care problems among computer users!

    Sitting at a computer generally causes a person to look straight ahead for long stretches, work in a dry office or home environment, and to blink less often. These factors can lead to vision problems. It is not just the continuous looking at the screen that takes the full blame, since many of factors add to this issue. Such factors are: improper screen resolution and contrast, screen glare, improper eye to screen distance.

    In order to help combat these controllable items, one should always set their computer monitor resolution to the highest resolution the monitor can support since it provides greater clarity and usually leads to improved comfort. Another step would be to adjust the contrast so that the computer monitor is not to bright and not to dark.

    Now depending on your desks location, a worker may deal with glare and reflections. To combat this one could add a monitor screen protector to help cut down on the glare . Another option would be to add window treatments to help cut down on the sun glare.

    To help combat the distance issue, one should always position their computer monitor at a distance that allows them to clearly see their monitor so that they do not need to tilt their head in a manner that changes their posture. The recommended eye distance to your monitor should be 20”– 26”. This factor all depends on your monitor size so adjust the distance accordingly.

    Now just by performing these changes, will not help save you from eye strain so we here at encourage computer users to also take breaks from their computer monitor so that one’s eyes are not always focused on just their monitor.

    For all those that have had an eye exam, we are sure you have herd of the 20-20-20 rule. For all those that do not know what this is, it is an eye exercise one should practice to help reduce eye strain. The way to perform this exercise is by performing the following:

    For every 20 minutes of computer use,  take a 20 second break and look at an object that is 20 feet away.

    We are sure many computer users are saying “That’s easier said than done”. Little do they know,  there are free software programs that can help remind you of this exercise so that you don’t forget. The key here is repetition.

    Do you tend to have dry eyes during the winter months? It's not uncommon for people to suffer from dry eyes in the colder months of the year.     The rate you blink is reduced over a period of time when you focus on something for a long period of time. On average a person blinks around 18 times per minute. Your average bink is cut in half when looking at a digital device.

    You may be wondering what’s the point of wearing sunglasses on a cold day? Sunglasses help diminish the brightness on chilly days and shielding your eyes from the sun is important. Sunglasses will not only provide the necessary UV protection but will also stop any cold wind coming into direct contact with your eyes, and shield them from dust and grit which can also contribute to dry eye.

    A Good Night's Sleep
    Resting your eyes is very important, as your focus on things throughout the day your eyes get tired, just like the rest of your body and the right amount of sleep will keep them feeling healthy and refreshed.

    Research has shown that regular Omega 3 supplements can significantly improve ocular comfort, as well as being good for the heart and brain. You can buy Omega 3 supplements in most pharmacies, supermarkets or even online.

    Invest in a humidifier for your home or office as it can help maintain the right amount of moisture in the air, replacing the tears lost as a result of indoor heating drawing the moisture out of the air.

    Stay Hydrated
